“I’m just saying we need to work on finding other ways to connect, baby. That’s all. Like, we need to go out sometimes…date, you know…do some different shit. Have fun.”
He hesitated before responding. But, to Mickey’s surprise and relief, leaned over and kissed her passionately.
“Aight, we can do that. I hear what you saying and I’m down to make ‘us’ more interesting.”
Mickey smiled, feeling as if the crisis had been averted. She rose from the bed and removed her purse from his dresser.
“But I don’t see why we can’t work on all that while you’re right here with me…living here with me.”
Mickey paused, her back turned to him. She rolled her eyes, ticked that they were right back to this topic. Well, while she was in honesty mode she may as well go ahead and tell the whole truth. Mickey turned around to face Pillsbury, slipping her purse strap over her arm and looking at him matter-of-factly.
“It’s just not a good idea right now, Pills,” she told him. “I’m a business woman…I can’t afford to do anything to risk everything I’ve accomplished.”
“And what does yo’ business have to do with us living together?”
“If your business dealings ever were to get mixed up with my business dealings, I could lose everything.”
Pillsbury stared at her blankly like he just didn’t get it. It annoyed her further that she had to break it down for him.
“I can’t get caught up in your shit, Pills,” she spat out. “If you get busted or some shit and I’m here with you, then I could go down with you…and that whole ride or die chick thing is some bullshit. I’m not down to go to jail with anybody especially if I’m not even involved with their mess.”
He nodded as if it were finally starting to sink in.
“Oh yeah?” he said slowly. “But yo’ ass has a key and you use if often enough…hell, Mick, you’re over here at least twice a week and you don’t ever seem scared that five-oh gon’ bang down the door and take yo’ ass in.”
He made a very valid point, but Mickey wasn’t backing down.
“That’s different. That’s a chance I may take twice a week. But being here indefinitely leaves me wide open and I don’t want to do it.”
Pillsbury now rose from the bed and stood in front of her. She tried to keep her focus on the angry scowl on his face and not the bulge between his legs. She crossed her arms, bracing herself for whatever it was he was about to throw out at her.
“Look, you knew who I was going in, so don’t be acting all brand new and shit with me, Mick.”
“I’m not! And I’m not tripping. I’m just not trying to be too connected to your drama. Stop acting like you don’t understand that.”
“My drama? Aye man, if you feel all funny style about what a brotha does then why did you even get in to it with me? This is who I am, take it or leave it.
